McCallum in the money
$6,000 after winning the Forty Frame Game in Huntsville, Alabama which followed the American Bowling Congress Championships.
Six members of the Marlboro team in the Miller High Life League went to the ABC Championships which were held in a converted Convention Centre in Alabama from February to the first week in June. The event involved some 15,000 bowlers and play was constant throughout the day as teams came in, bowled and departed.
Other members of the Marlboro team were Richard Zuill, David Abraham, Doug Hines, Jim Godwin and guest Oscar Andrade. Competition involved three sessions of doubles, singles and the team event. Results are still being tabulated.
However, it was in the 40 Frame Game which followed at another location that McCallum made his mark, winning by just one pin.
McCallum beat the the previous leader (1212) with his score of 1213 but then had to wait another three weeks before all of the 10,000 bowlers from the US, Canada, Mexico and the Bahamas had bowled and results confirmed.
"They called me this week to say it was official, that I had won,'' said McCallum.
"It was my lucky day. I kind of feel like all the work that I have put in over the years is now paying off. Now I get to go back to the National Championships, probably in October, with all expenses paid for the top 10 finishers.'' McCallum, president of the Bermuda Bowling Association, also hopes to finish in the money for the doubles of the American Bowling Congress Championships where he played with Zuill, money which will go into the Marlboro `account'.
Three other Bermuda teams also went to the same tournament, the Bermuda Onions I, II and III.
