Corporation of Hamilton secretary Roger Sherratt said the city workmen were in the process of redesigning and resurfacing the road.

"We've wanted to do this for some time, but we had to wait until major buildings were finished as they required underground work,'' Mr. Sherratt explained. "Planters containing trees, shrubs and flowers are being added to increase the aesthetical appeal of the road.'' And Mr. Sherratt said although the planters may reduce parking space, they were being placed where they would least affect parking. And by today "the resurfacing of three quarters of the road will be finished,'' Mr. Sherratt promised. "And the southern end will be done early next year.'' He added that the pedestrian crossing in front of M.R. Onions restaurant was to be modified.

"This pedestrian crossing is one of the newest in Hamilton and there have been many complaints of drivers who have not stopped for pedestrians,'' Mr.

Sherratt said.

The sidewalk has been brought out to the edge of the parking lane so that pedestrians can stand right on the edge of the crossing.

Also the level of the crossing will be raised, making it easily visible to drivers and preventing them from speeding.

Mr. Sherratt said warning signs would also be placed before the crossing, and he advised motorists to slow down and exercise caution when approaching the crossing.

"This is part of an ongoing programme for upgrading in Hamilton,'' he added.
