Anti-drug initiative hailed a big success

been hailed as a brilliant success by the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

Last night more than 450 packed themselves into CedarBridge Academy's cafeteria to watch a live broadcast of a play performed by inmates at the Westgate Correctional Facility.

The play was organised by CADA in the hope that it would send out a clear message about the dangers of drugs in an interesting and entertaining way.

And after last night's performance CADA bosses are hopeful that more productions will be in the pipeline.

Executive Director Dominique Smith said: "Part of our statement is to send a message out to the community about the dangers of substance abuse and we decided to do it through the arts, in this case the theatre.

"We're very pleased with the turnout -- we've had a great mix of both adults and children. In fact we still have about 150 people on the waiting list.

Hopefully this will be the first of many such nights.'' Although not everyone found the play enjoyable many spectators applauded the initiative.

Delefi Burrows, 24, a student from Smith's Parish, said: "The play doesn't seem to be saying anything new -- it's the same old story -- but it's definitely a good way of getting that story across. It's always good to keep trying and to never give up.'' One woman, who did not wish to be named, said: "It's a very effective way of sending out the message. There are just so many people here tonight.''
