Zelkin misses out by inches
for the Junior Western Open in Illinois.
Zelkin, missed a three-foot putt for par at the Cog Hill Golf Club that would have put him in a play-off with seven others. He recorded identical qualifying rounds of 75 to miss the cut by one, the first time in 74 years that organisers had switched from a 64-player cut to 32.
Zelkin was joined in Illinois by Adam Tufts and Jimmy Legere. Tufts shot 80-83--163 and Legere 79-96--175. The youngsters are scheduled to play in the one-day Illinois State Junior Championship today and return to Bermuda tomorrow.
Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, Chris Garland put in a fine effort in attempting to become the first Bermudian to qualify for the US Junior Boys Championship.
Garland, in the race for six spots among 110, placed 20th with rounds of 83 and 75 for a 158 total. Garland, suffered through the usual problems of Bermuda juniors -- slick greens. He had several three-putts in the first round before returning one of the better second-round scores.
Next weekend, Garland will join Kim Marshall in California to play in the Junior Worlds.
