High winds possible

A frontal system is approaching the Island from the west, said Bermuda Weather Service meteorologist Mark Guishard, and a low pressure system is forecast to develop in front of it and rapidly deepen.

As the front had not reached the East Coast of the US as of yesterday morning, Bermuda can expect the resulting bad weather from the system to hit late tomorrow.

"This will cause the Island to experience some strong winds late Saturday night and into Sunday,'' said Mr. Guishard.

"The winds ahead of the front will come from the southwest and range from 20 to 30 knots with some gusts up to 35 knots.

"Upon passage of the front, the winds will veer to the northwest and pick up a little more -- probably to around 25 to 35 knots or thereabouts.'' Along with the high winds will be rain, Mr. Guishard said, but a series of showers, and not a prolonged, heavy downfall, is expected.

A small craft warning will likely be put in place for the Island before Saturday night and a gale warning may follow for Sunday depending on the strength the forecasters determine the front will reach.

However, Mr. Guishard stressed: "It's a little too early to say for definite.'' Mark Guishard: Windy weekend
