It is the first time Tufted Ducks have been recorded as visitors to Bermuda.

The birds were spotted at the nature reserve by ornithologists Mr. Eric Amos and Mr. Andrew Dobson this week.

Mr. Dobson said: "Two immature Tufted Ducks were observed on the pond in the company of four Ring-necked Ducks.

"Generally dark brown in colour, these birds will not develop noticeable tufts on the back of their heads until the spring.'' About 350 species of birds have been recorded in Bermuda, with one or two species being added each year. Mr. Dobson added: "Most of the new species to Bermuda are found commonly in North America, but the Tufted Duck is particularly exciting as it is native to Europe and Asia.

"It is a regular visitor in small numbers on both coasts of North America, so not an unexpected species in Bermuda. It is particularly pleasing for the Audubon Society that the birds should choose their reserve at Somerset Long Bay as much effort has been spent in making it a suitable habitat for wild birds.''
