Best urges clubs to support new scheme

With former soccer greats such as Earl (Townsey) Russell and Lionel (Baldy) Smith among those making valuable contributions, Bermuda Football Association's Technical Director Clyde Best says he's happy the School of Excellence for youngsters has finally got underway.

But he's not so happy about the initial response.

Best was this week urging clubs, parents and coaches to get more involved in the programme -- designed for children 12 and under -- by making themselves available to assist in coaching at all of the venues throughout the Island.

"I want the clubs, in particular, to send their players out to join the programme. Many clubs haven't been doing anything much with these age groups in terms of developing their basic skills, so we are implementing this programme to do it,'' said Best.

"To the clubs and parents I remind them that we are sowing the seeds. Let's embrace the programme so that we can see players advancing to the national level with the normal basic skills that are required of them to excel.'' Best said the response at all of the venues could be much better if there was a greater interest shown by clubs and parents. But ex-players who played at a high level were also being asked to make a contribution.

Former players are asked to contact Best at the BFA offices (295-2199) during the day.

"We are trying the best we can with what we have, but these ex-players can have some important input. Townsey is playing a vital role. He came out on the first Saturday and has committed to become more involved,'' Best added.

"When I was coming up he was one of my role models and naturally I was encouraged to approach him about helping us out and I was excited to see him accept. But we need more, many more veterans like him.'' According to Best, it was an eye opener to hear Russell note how he counted as many as 80 errant passes during a single game recently, although he was already aware of several teams' shortcoming in this area.

Best is reminding parents that they can register their children at the BFA's offices in Hamilton or at the grounds on Saturday mornings.

The programmes are set up from 10-12 p.m. at Spice Valley school field, Somerset Primary, Berkeley, Garrison field and Elliott school field.
