In the only piano performances of this year's Festival, Mr. Howard's first concert will open with `Eight Variations on `A Woman is the Most Marvellous Thing' by Mozart. This will be followed by a Beethoven Sonata and Sonatina.

Also included will be Schumannn's Etudes symphoniques, and Liszt's Fantasy on themes from Mozart's `Figaro' and `Don Giovanni'.

Tomorrow night, the pianist will present an all-Liszt programme. Both concerts will begin at 8 p.m.

Mr. Howard is well known as a soloist, ensemble player and accompanist. He has travelled the world as a performer and his recital programmes are renowned for their communication of his personal joy in musical discovery and for his intellectual command and pianistic spontaneity.

His recordings include works by numerous composers but from 1985 until 1999 he undertook the largest recording project by any artist: the complete solo music of Franz Liszt -- in total 94 compact discs. The feat earned him a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The artist has won the Grand Prix du Disque five times and holds numerous international awards for his dedication to Liszt's music. In fact, he is President of the British Liszt Society.

He is also a composer of opera, orchestral, chamber and sacred music and songs, and has received many commissions to complete unfinished works.

Mr. Howard was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1999 for his services to the arts as musicologist, composer, pianist and mentor to young musicians.
