He replaces Mr. Ward Young, who resigned because he could not devote sufficient time to being campaign chairman.

The switch comes as the UBP admits an election is expected this year.

Dr. Gibbons' appointment was ratified last night by the UBP's central executive.

UBP chairman Dr. James King said he was delighted at the appointment.

"We enter this election period with a strong and diverse team, and look forward to the campaign ahead.'' Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan said his party was "extremely fortunate'' to have the backing of such people as Mr. Young and Dr. Gibbons.

Sir John, party leader, said he regretted the resignation of Mr. Young, campaign chairman for three years.
