Defending champions Sally Madden of Bermuda and Barbara Bennett of Florida relish the challenge that Jennifer Kelly of Bermuda and June Eyton of Quebec
Invitation Tournament.
The two teams are deadlocked with a two-round score of 126 and the stage is set for an exciting finish today in the net competition. Madden and Bennett carded a 63 yesterday while Kelly and Eyton had a superb 59.
But Madden and Bennett, the two-time winners, are not at all fazed by the spirited challenge being offered going into the final round. Bennett, who resides in Bal Harbour, Florida, suggested she is encouraged by the final round scenario.
"We are looking forward to the match-up because when the pressure is on we get more motivated and find a lot of incentive. We know there is no room for error,'' said Bennett.
The champions, who were also winners in 1990, had a decent front nine by finishing seven-under-par. However, their game fell apart when they started the back nine but were fortunate to be able to recover before any real harm developed.
"The strength of our game is that when one is in trouble the other usually comes on strong and that's what happened when we finished off the front nine with a net 28 and gross 35 after struggling for awhile,'' said Bennett.
"But it was rather disastrous for us over the first two holes on the back nine. We had two double bogeys but finally got back on track after going to sleep. We awoke on the 12th with a par and then had a birdie to recover and finish off pretty good.'' Four strokes behind the net leaders are Ann Boyle of Bermuda and Karen Oldham of Ohio, who shot a 65 and have a two-round score of 130.
Peggy Thompson of Bermuda and Pat Sawin of Pennsylvania, joint leaders after the first round, fell back in the field after only managing a 69. They enter the final round on 132.
In the gross division, Madeline Joell-Warren of Bermuda and Janina Jacobs of Missouri lead after two rounds with a 148. They carded a 72 yesterday.
Two strokes behind are Bermuda's Arlie Arton and Lida Kinnicult of Connecticut after a 69 in the second round.
