Ocean View manager Pitt and Port Royal employee Ascento combined for a three under par 68 to take an early one shot lead over visitors Dick Capozzi and Mike Leary (69).
Four pairs were tied for third on one-under-par 70, including former two-time winners Dennis Connors and Dan Rourke of the US.
The second round of the 72-hole tournament takes place today while 16 women's pairs will begin the 54-hole ladies' championship, also at Port Royal.
Veteran pro golfer J.J.Madeiros picked up a $600 cheque yesterday when he won the Super Seniors division of the Pepsi Cola of Wilmington tournament.
Madeiros carded rounds of 78-82-78 for a winning 238 total on the 6,449 yard, par-72 Willam Byrd course at Sea Trail Plantation, Sunset Beach, North Carolina.
