Interviews and resumes

will be conducting a student seminar on interviewing and resume writing at the Bermuda Career Expo at CedarBridge Academy.

Ms Bassett advises: "These two skills are the key to successful job hunting and necessary for everyone to know.'' Ms Bassett will cover how to write a resume and what should be included and emphasised.

Additionally, she will give pointers on preparing for an interview and the appropriate dress and behaviour for an interview. Follow-up steps after the interview will be discussed.

Do's and don'ts of interviews Know the name and position of the interviewer.

Carry a copy of your resume with you.

Provide proof of your qualifications.

Have proof of identity and date of birth.

Have copies of letters of recommendation with you. Keep originals.

Take along a black pen and a note pad.

Have you social insurance number.

Go to the interview alone.

Dress appropriately to suit dress code of the workplace.

Be well groomed.

Don't eat gum or smoke.

Be early or on time. If you are delayed, telephone.

Shake hands firmly if the interviewer extends a hand.

Think before answering a question. Avoid one word answers.

Sit up in the chair and smile when appropriate.

Answer questions honestly and do no be defensive.

Look directly at the interviewer during the interview.

Be prepared to talk about your strengths and weaknesses.

Ask about the job duties and the hours.

Ask about the salary at the end of the interview.

Thank the interviewer at the end of the interview.
