And despite its outlandish appearance, commuters have also been tempted to board the motorised chuffer proving it's more than just a novelty.

There are two routes -- a service from Bull's Head which takes commuters from the car park in the morning and takes them back in the evening and a circular route which lets passengers stop at attractions before rejoining the train.

Mr. Sherratt said: "We are more than delighted with the reception it's had.

Several times it has been full with tourists.'' Passengers buying a special ticket on the three-carriage train can also enter sights such as the Bermuda Underwater Institute.

Commuters have also leapt at the new mode of getting to work on the 60-seater locomotive.

But new routes are being looked at to take them back to their cars at Bull's Head in the evening as the present route is too near a bus stop and has added to a bottleneck.

Mr. Sherratt said: "We will work out the best possible route but we welcome this as a new form of transport for the city and I hope it will encourage more people to leave their cars at home.''
