There are three categories of World Heritage Site: Cultural, Natural and Mixed -- a combination of the two. The Historic Town of St. George and Related Fortifications falls within the Cultural category, which is classed as "monuments, groups of buildings or sites with historical, aesthetic, archaeological, scientific, ethnological or anthropological value'', having satisfied Selection Criterion Four of being: "..an outstanding example of a type of building or architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates a significant stage/s in human history''.
