England-based teenager flies in to bolster Bermuda ranks

England-based off-spinner Christopher Lonsdale will arrive in Holland today to press for a place in Bermuda's squad for upcoming ODIs against the Dutch tomorrow and next Monday at the VOC Cricket Club in Rotterdam.

The teenaged bowler - born in Bermuda - was first spotted in Sussex during the Island's ICC Trophy preparations, and his late addition to the team could prove timely with coach Gus Logie's roster having already been stretched to near breaking point following the injury to all rounder Jacobi Robinson in Denmark last week.

It is understood that Lonsdale had submitted written correspondence to Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) notifying them about his willingness and eligibility to represent the Island at the national level, and was introduced to coach Logie in the UK two years ago.

Logie confirmed yesterday that the player was due to join the team today. Lonsdale, who has represented Loughborough University, on of the UK's top sports-oriented universities, is expected to practise with his new team-mates during a last-minute training session today in Rotterdam.

"We could certainly use some more support in the field," Logie said. "So there is a good possibility that he could play in the one dayers."

Speaking from Toronto yesterday, BCB youth development director Arnold Manders revealed that Bermuda Under-19 team officials had contemplated including the off spinner in their squad presently overseas in Toronto bidding to qualify for next year's Under 19 World Cup in Malaysia.

"We did give it a thought or two, but eventually decided to go with the players we had," said Manders, who captained the senior national team here in Holland during the 1990 ICC Trophy.

Should he impress team officials in Holland, Lonsdale could possibly join the likes of Glamorgan skipper David Hemp, another player eligible to represent Bermuda also based in England.

Hemp, the first Bermudian batsman to score a double century at the senior national level and first to score a half- century in the World Cup, was unavailable to accompany his country of birth on their current tour of Europe through County commitments at Glamorgan.

Meanwhile, Under-19 stalwarts Malachi Jones, Stefan Kelly and Rodney Trott can also ease some of the strain on the Island's depleted senior national team when they arrive in Ireland next week to offer much needed reinforcements for the upcoming Intercontinental Cup commitment with the Irish in Dublin.

The talented trio are presently spearheading Bermuda's Under-19 World Cup qualifying hopes in Toronto. Bermuda depart for Ireland next Tuesday.
