Kim Wilson 'honoured and humbled'
Lawyer Kim Wilson was delighted to be offered the role of Senator by Dr. Ewart Brown — and not just because of her personal political ambitions.
The married mother-of-two was desperate to see more women appointed to the upper chamber and playing a bigger role on the Island’s political scene. Her appointment and that of 25-year-old Davida Morris will double the number of women in the Senate from two to four.
The other females are independent Senator Carol Bassett and United Bermuda Party Senator Gina Spence-Farmer.
Ms Wilson said: “I think that having more women in the Senate providing a different insight, that certainly can’t be anything but beneficial. It provides a totally different perspective and I think that’s needed.”
Ms Wilson, a managing partner at Trott & Duncan in Hamilton, said she was “honoured and humbled” to have been invited to join the Government.
“I think this magnificent team is going to take this country from strength to strength,” she said.
The new position also makes her a Junior Minister, though she has not yet been assigned her ministries. She would not reveal which she would prefer to work for but said: “I’m prepared to assist in whichever areas they appoint me.”
The 43-year-old joined the Progressive Labour Party as a life member in 1985 and said she had been working hard in her Sandys branch. She told The Royal Gazette <$>that when she was offered her new role she “prayed about it and spoke to my husband”. “It’s something that I felt comfortable about doing,” she added.
Ms Wilson, who grew up in Illinois but spent holidays in Bermuda, was a guidance counsellor at Whitney Institute before becoming a lawyer.
