Get ready for a wave of new ads

We may soon see a host of new pharmaceutical ads warning us that we are too tense and at risk of heart attack, but don’t let the news cause your pressure to rise any further. According to the September edition of Alternative Medicine, drug manufacturers Novartis, Merck and Sanyko have given the American Society for Hypertension $775,000 to fund a new definition of the condition. The money is also to be used to explain it to physicians.

Blood pressure readings on their own cannot predict which of those with hypertension — readings between 120/80 and 140/90 — will need to be treated to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

The new definition would expand the current one to include risks for heart disease and signs of organ damage. This would greatly increase the number of people diagnosed with hypertension.
