Jim Huber impressed with Mid Ocean
A veteran golf commentator said the Mid Ocean Club golf course surprised everyone yesterday, especially the players.
Jim Huber, a TNT Sport commentator, has worked on PGA tournaments for the past 15 years and when asked about the course, he said it was surprising how difficult the greens were.
"I think the course surprised everyone. I played on it with the members and they were concerned about their course. They didn't want it to embarrass them. I thought it held up pretty well."
Mr. Huber said the course was a lot tougher than everyone expected and said the greens are different from what the players normally encounter.
As for the players, the veteran said he thinks Padraig Harrington, Angel Cabrera, Jim Furyk and Zach Johnson will play better in the second round of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf today.
"I think if you look at the scoring, they didn't tear it up." Mr. Huber was impressed by the crowd and called the 6,000 spectators "unbelievable". "Is there anyone left on the Island? The whole course was packed," he said.
And he said he could tell Bermudians were very proud their Island was selected for the Grand Slam.
In comparison to the tournament being held in Hawaii, Mr. Huber said: "It's very comparable. They are both little slices of paradise. This is a more challenging course and I think it televises better with the views."
He also said TNT should be very happy with the move to Bermuda and he would like to see the tournament return to the Island.
Even though the course was more difficult than expected, Mr. Huber said he thought the players enjoyed playing on it.
"Once they played on it a few times, I think they got better."
The final round of the Grand Slam of golf begins this morning at 11 a.m. with the prize presentation taking place late in the afternoon. The purse is $1.35 million.
