Hogges want to turn NSC into a 'family fortress'

Home, sweet home: Hogges would like to see more fans in the NSC grandstand than attended their home games last season.

The Bermuda Hogges hierarchy has purposefully scheduled next season's home fixtures with young supporters in mind as they try and turn the National Sports Centre into a 'family fortress'.

The bulk of next season's scheduling was completed at the USL's AGM last week although the fixture list will not be officially finalised by the league until early next year.

Club president Shaun Goater attended the AGM, in Florida, with coach Kyle Lightbourne and co-owner Paul Scope and believes the dates and kick-off times of Hogges matches on the preliminary draft will encourage more families to flock through the turnstiles.

"Arranging next season's fixtures was the most important part of the AGM for us," said Goater. "Last season our fixture list wasn't ideal and we went to the meeting with the dates and kick-off times we wanted.

"We made a note of dates to avoid such as Cup Match and although the fixture list still needs official approval we're very happy with how it stands. Hopefully there will not be too many, if any, changes.

"It's important we try and attract more supporters to the National Sports Centre next year so we tried to select dates and kick-off times conducive for parents to bring along their children."

Matchday entertainment is another area the Hogges are particularly looking to develop next season with the Island's first professional team planning to borrow concepts from some of the more experienced franchises.

"On our travels last season we saw how other franchises hosted matches and there were a lot of things we liked such as half-time entertainment. That's something we will be looking into," added Goater.

Last season Hogges started their inaugural campaign a week behind many teams, followed by a three-week lull in matches, leaving them playing catch-up from the outset.

Goater said they were also keen to avoid a repeat of playing twice in 48 hours when overseas and stressed the importance of a day's rest between matches.

"We've looked to avoid playing a match one day, travelling to the next venue and playing again the following day. That's something we did last season against Crystal Palace Baltimore and Richmond Kickers, losing both games.

"On our double-header away trips we've also tried to play the team we perceive to be the stronger first. These are little things we've tried to introduce into next season's fixture list."

Once the USL-D2 fixture list has been confirmed the Hogges will look to secure those dates with the National Sports Centre.
