Championship still wide open

The First Division title and promotion slots are up for grabs as six teams still have a chance of going up into the top flight.

Wolves and Southampton Rangers are the best bets as both have games in hand against rivals Hamilton Parish, St. David's, X Roads and Somerset Eagles.

Yet neither one of these two teams can take this for granted with the top six separated by just six points.

League leaders Parish, who are one point above St. David's and two above Rangers, face X Roads tomorrow.

And knowing three points will be vital in order for them to apply pressure to those behind them, and the two sides with games in hand, Parish will be looking for nothing less than a victory.

Rangers, however, seem to be in the driver's seat as they are two points back with a game in hand and face mid-table Young Men's Social Club at Bernard Park.

St. David's play eastern rivals St. George's knowing nothing less than a win will do as they are trying to avoid playing First Division football yet again next season.

Somerset Eagles play lowly Paget in a match that is sure to entertain and produce goals, with neither team really playing for anything, although Eagles do have a mathematical chance for promotion.

Wolves are at home to Prospect and need three points, plus whatever goal aggregate they can get, to push themselves head and shoulders above the rest going down the final straight.

Defender Michael Williams feels his team-mates are ready for what lies ahead.

"The league is tight, but it is still possible for us to go up", said Williams. "We have the players and character to get us over the hump and see us through the rest of the way.

"We have Sunday's game in the bag (Prospect) as long as we play as a team and show the harmony we have had all season."

Williams reckons Wolves can even finish on top of the charts.

"The job is simple. Score goals and we will win games", Williams continued. "We are confident we can do it so it is time so show people on the pitch."

BAA are the lone side not playing this weekend, as they have finished their schedule and are cemented to the bottom of the table.
