Four-goal baptism of fire for BAA
St. George's Colts 4
BAA 0
There was a rude awakening for newcomers BAA during their baptism in First Division football yesterday when hosts St. George's Colts handed the visitors a sound four-goal defeat on a wet pitch at Wellington Oval.
BAA were floored early by two-goal hero Jade Foggo and two additional goals from Kuma Smith and Allan Douglas Jr. in the second half made it a romp for the home side, although BAA's defence deserve some credit for preventing an onslaught after falling behind by a two-goal margin so early.
Foggo forced BAA to pay attention after just two minutes when he netted his first goal and then the visitors were put in a panic mode when he scored his second four minutes later.
However, with centre-back John Doran solid as ever and player-coach Gary Adams always alert to steady his midfield, BAA held firm for the rest of the half.
But BAA goalkeeper Clifford Powell was kept busy in the meantime dealing with shots from the busy Colts front line.
In the second half Colts re-established their supremacy and it was hard-working midfielder Kuma Smith putting them ahead 3-0 after 58 minutes. BAA, playing with a lot of fight and enthusiasm, if little else, held their opponents at bay until nine minutes from time when Douglas got the fourth goal for the home side.
Throughout the contest Colts called the tune to the extent that their own goalkeeper Troy Hall had little work to do.
Social Club 1
Prospect United 1
Social Club and Prospect United battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw in steady drizzle at Bernard Park yesterday.
Both teams had ample chances to put the match away during this evenly contested First Division affair.
But in the end goals either side of the break from Social Club's Nathan Simons and Prospect substitute Andrew Jackson saw to it that both teams came away with a share of the spoils.
Simons put hosts Social Club ahead in the 25th minute after nodding home Clay Darrell's searching cross in the middle at the back post.
Teenager Darrell - son of former national cricket team skipper Clay Smith - was a constant menace to the United defence with his wizardry on the ball, excellent running off it and precision passing.
But Prospect had their share of chances to get back in the match before the break, only to be denied on many occasions when it looked easier to score.
Social Club suffered a setback at the half when they lost goal-scorer Simons to injury while young Darrell gradually faded when play resumed, leaving Quincy Paynter to hold most of the slack up front.
Prospect attacked with more purpose in the second half and threatened on several occassions to crack the ice.
But just when it appeared as though Simons' strike would do the trick super-sub Jackson leapt from the bench to capitalise on some sloppy defending and draw the teams level five minutes from the end.
But the drama didn't stop there as Prospect had the ball cleared off the line and Social Club struck the woodwork seconds before referee Ronue Cann blew the final whistle.
Earlier, Chloe Martin netted hat-trick to give Lady Rams a 3-0 shutout win over visiting St.George's.
Meanwhile, the match at nearby Devonshire Rec. between Wolves and Southampton Rangers was postponed after club officials declared the pitch unsuitable for play.
X Roads 1
Somerset Eagles 4
This opening away victory by Eagles proved that they could be a force to be reckoned with in the division this season.
The home side could only manage a consolation goal ten minutes from time when Orlyn Williams beat Gabriel Wilkinson in the Eagles goal with his penalty kick.
Inspired in the middle by player-coach Kenny Thompson, Eagles dominated play for majority of the opening half but had to settle for a 1-0 lead at the half on an early goal by Darren Dowling after two minutes.
Eagles were more accurate with their finishing in the second half as Thompson, Dowling and substitute Kanhai Fray tore X Roads apart and put the result completely out of reach.
Before X Roads got their lone strike, their goalkeeper Garon Dowling was kept busy denying the eager Eagles' forwards from handing his team an even more severe beating.
Also kept under pressure was former Dandy Town centreback Troy Durham, making his return after serving a long suspension he discovered just how gruelling a season it will be until he gets into top playing shape.
In addition to being slow in defence X Roads had deficiencies up front to which led to an fairly uneventful day for Eagles' goalkeeper Wilkinson.
Paget Lions 1
Hamilton Parish 6
Hamilton Parish peppered hosts Paget at White Hill Field yesterday. The visiting Parish took only five minutes to open their account and from there never looked back.
Hot Peppers snatched the lead through a Dwayne Astwood lob before ending the spectacle as a contest two minutes later when hat-trick hero Romane Smith opened his personal tally with a simple tap-in from close range.
Smith then made it 3-0 when he broke through the Lions' defence and buried his shot before completing his treble from the penalty spot to send Parish into the break with a commanding lead.
Jamie Smith then got in on the scoring act when play resumed after capitalising on a fine solo effort before Jevonne Lambert netted Parish's sixth goal to rub salt in the wounds.
Kion Smith pulled one back for Lions with a consolation goal from the penalty spot in the closing minutes.
