Bermudian student honoured

A Bermudian student has been recognised at a Massachusetts college for his accomplishments as an entrepreneur.

Roy-Allan Burch, from Warwick, is a graduating senior at Springfield College. He will be honoured by the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation's Entrepreneurship Initiative at their annual banquet on April 15 at The Log Cabin.

According to a release, Mr. Burch's business venture, 'Wonder Effect', offers "silk-screened apparel that conveys messages that are socially responsible to its young target market".

The clothing is designed on the theme of education by first raising awareness and then suggesting a course of action. Mr. Burch and his partner, Benjamin Cassavant are raising awareness on the situation in the Darfur region of Sudan as well as worldwide issues of poverty, violence and racism.

In the 2006/2007 academic year, Mr. Harold Grinspoon, through the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation's Entrepreneurship Initiative, recognised more than 30 students attending colleges and universities in the Pioneer Valley for demonstrating the "entrepreneurial spirit". Individual awards ranged from $500 to $3,800. It is anticipated that a similar number of students will be recognised this year as well.

Participating institutions include American International College, Bay Path College, Elms College, Greenfield Community College, Hampshire College, Holyoke Community College, Mt. Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Springfield Technical Community College, University of Massachusetts, Western New England College and Westfield State College.
