Logie may change winning team to give youngsters their chance

Possible starter: Azeem Pitcher

National cricket coach Gus Logie may face a dilemma over team selection ahead of today’s second 50-over friendly with Uganda at the Sir Ali Muslim Cricket Club ground in Kenya.

On Sunday Logie fielded a winning combination as Bermuda picked up their first win in the post-World Cup era over the Ugandans by a slim, seven-run margin.

But now the former West Indies Test player will have to decide whether to go with the same nucleus or use today’s contest to give others such as all rounder Kion Butterfield, off spinners Tamauri Tucker and Rodney Trott, or batsman Azeem Pitcher a chance to prove themselves at this level.

“We probably won’t have the same team. We may give some of the other youngsters a chance to gain experience,” team skipper Irving Romaine hinted. “The guys are doing well and it’s good to see the youngsters fitting in nicely.”

Romaine was particularly pleased to see a potentially long-term opening partnership between Jekon Edness and Stephen Outerbridge continue to flourish against the Ugandans during the Islanders’ first match on the tour of Africa.

Together the pair shared in an 83-run opening stand that gave the tourists a solid foundation to build on.

Romaine also hailed the returns of seasoned campaigners Kevin Hurdle and Janeiro Tucker for their contributions with the bat and ball that propelled the team to victory.

Pacer Hurdle grabbed four for 40 to lead the Islanders’ attack while Tucker held the innings together with a timely half-century (59).

“It’s a good vibe in the team right now. The guys are hungry and want to do even better while it’s good to have a win,” said Romaine, who is also encouraged by the way the squad’s younger members have responded so far.

“They have brought a new spirit to the team that I think has rubbed off on others,” he added. “They are hungry as well and it feels good.”

Following today’s clash, Bermuda will meet hosts Kenya in the first of three one-day internationals (ODI) in Nairobi on Thursday.
