The future is bright for a sunglasses shop.

For the Sunglass and Watch Shop in Hamilton is to expand with a new store at the revamped Hamilton Princess, creating two new jobs in the process.

Sunglass and Watch Shop general manager David Boyce said: “I’m ecstatic — I think what they’re doing at Hamilton Princess is just unbelievable for Bermuda.

“It’s going to attract a whole new lot of tourists we haven’t done before.

“It will be good for retail in general with more people on the island and a higher end tourist.”

The Sunglass and Watch Store will concentrate on their upmarket eyewear range at the Hamilton Princess, without the watch range carried at the Reid Street shop, opened just two years ago by David Boyce and brother James.

David Boyce said: “We will be selling Ray Ban and all the high end sunglasses like Gucci and Dior. We have employed two extra Bermudian staff as a result. It’s good for employment as well.

He added: “I guess when the right opportunities come along, you have to jump at them.”

James Boyce said that the hotel, which has had around $100 million spent on it after the Green family took over the city landmark in 2012, had put out requests for tender some time ago and the store, linked to AS Cooper & Sons, had jumped at the chance.

James Boyce added: “It got sent out to locals and overseas people — we responded and after negotiations, we ended up being one of two operators in the hotel.

“It’s fantastic. It’s a beautiful hotel. They have done an amazing job here.

“It’s also the hotel for the America’s Cup and Bermuda and the hotel will be very firmly placed on the map. This is a very exciting opportunity.”
