The committee headed by Conchita Ming that's charged with planning the year-long celebration of Bermuda's 400th birthday has completed its postmortem on the opening event that drew thousands to Front Street on January 3.

She said: "We have taken into account the amazing feedback we've received, there were some shortcomings, mostly of a technical nature, and we are eagerly looking forward to the next events.

"We thought the opening in terms of attendance by such a cross-section from the community was amazing. Some even felt there were too many people but they made their way through the crowds without any incidences."

Mrs. Ming lauded the police for their service, especially the reserves who took time out.

Reacting to criticism that the opening event could have been more effectively presented at the National Stadium, she said: "We had no idea of how many people would attend. We did not know how the country would respond to the promotion.

"The response was remarkable, overwhelming. The National Stadium never entered our mind. We had no idea so many people would turn out. It's amazing, although at one stage the committee gave thought to having three simultaneous opening events, one in St.George's, at the Dockyard and in Hamilton.

"The biggest criticism revolved around the technical aspects. There was difficulty with the screens that didn't work, especially at Number One Shed. The technical things marred it for the crowds in that area. There was criticism that some of the music could have been more diverse.

"Some felt there should have been more historical elements featured at the opening. As the Premier said, this is a year-long celebration, we have to pace ourselves because there are events throughout ever month providing opportunities to pay tribute to historical aspects of our journey, especially during the 'anniversary week' in July.

"We have done a postmortem and concluded we had an amazing start to the year," said Mrs. Ming.
