Watch out for the Croats - they're the surprise package of this tournament

WELL it's been a great tournament so far - anybody who says they're not enjoying it must obviously not be a football fan. I went four years ago and was thinking about going over again this year but in the end stayed here. But I am trying to catch most of the games and it seems as if everyone on the island is enjoying it.

So, who are my favourites at the end of the first week?

I think my favourite goal has to be Arda Turan's winner against the Swiss on Wednesday. Just as the game looked like heading for a draw, Turan struck it beautifully from the edge of the Swiss area.

But I wouldn't say Turan has been my favourite player. That has to be Germany's Lukas Podolski, who got both of Germany's goals in their win over Poland. he got another against the Croats last night so that's three goals in two games - and he's got a terrific strike rate overall in his international career.

And the team of the tournament so far for me? Undoubtedly the Dutch. Holland didn't just beat World Champions Italy on Monday night, they totally annihilated them.

It was just so entertaining to watch. That's the thing about the Dutch - they love to entertain. Even at 3-0, they didn't sit back and defend, they went looking for another - and nearly got it. It was such an open, free-flowing game.

In saying that, I don't think the Italians will do much in this tournament. Okay, they might be world champions, but it's an older team from two years ago. That's what you saw on Monday - the Dutch were just knocking the ball beyond them and running past.

Of course a lot of attention is being paid to Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo. I thought he was disappointing in their first game against Turkey, but then he went and scored against the Czechs on Wednesday.

People complain that he doesn't perform on the big occasion but I think really this time around it's simply fatigue. The pace in Europe, at a tournament like this, is slower than the Premiership. You would have thought that would suit him but you have to remember that he's had a terrificly busy season at United. I think it might be tiredness and fatigue and so you can't really knock him.

As for my final four, well obviously you can never count out the Germans - they're always there or thereabouts. I'm also going to go with Holland and Portugal while my dark horse is Croatia - and I'm not just saying that beacause they beat Germany last night.

I don't think the Greeks will be able to repeat their winning streak of four years ago but I think the Croats could have a similar run. When you consider they're from the former Yugoslavia, I always considered the Yugoslavs to be the Brazilians of Europe. The one thing that always seemed to let them down was their temperament, but I think their new manager has got that under control.

Yes, Croatia I think Croatia will be the surprsie package - simply because people paying attention to them like they should.

Moving from this years European Cup to the 2010 World Cup and Bermuda have a big match this weekend in Trinidad. I wouldn't say the atmosphere is going to be hostile playing away from home because the Trinidadians like their rum punch and samba too much - they're very laid back - if you want to see the definition of intimidating, go to Millwall.

At the same time it is going to be difficult for Bermuda no doubt about it. Basically you're talking about a group of amateurs up against a group of preofessionals.

I'm not saying Bermuda should just accept defeat - of course not, there's no point in even stepping on the pitch if you have that attitude. No, I think the players have to just go out there in the right frame of mind and try and remember that it's 11 against 11 with a goal at either end of the pitch and anything can happen. Just go out their, work your socks off, close them down and don't let them play. Then we might get something out of it.
