Jones to play for Stetson University

BERMUDA teenage golfer Nick Jones has been accepted into Stetson University in Florida, said his father Eardley Jones this week.

"Nick is overjoyed and so am I. Stetson is a great university and plays NCAA Division One golf," said Jones.

His son has had a stellar year so far and last month Golfweek magazine's chose him as a Young Player of the Week. That was the first time a Bermudian player has been chosen by the influential magazine.

Jones was given the award by the Golfweek staff after he shot consecutive 69s to win the International Junior Golf Tour event at Bent Tree Country Club in Sarasota, Florida.

Also this year Jones, has had a superb start to 2008 as he won back-to-back titles in Florida. He also won an event on the Junior Players' Tour in Sebastian Country Club in Sebastian, Florida. Like the IJGT, the tournament in Sebastian was also a 36-hole event.

Stetson University is a private, co-educational liberal arts college and consistently earns high rankings in national college guides.

Jones said of his son: "This is a real opportunity for Nick. He wants to study engineering and he also knows that Stetson has a very good golf team so he is really looking forward to starting (at the end of the summer)."

Victoria Hills Golf Club in historic DeLand is the home course for Stetson University's men's and women's golf teams.

Jones, now 18-years-old, is currently attending Grandview Prep and he graduates on Bermuda Day, May 24.
