Squad named for CAC Games

Defending champion: long jumper Smith

The Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA) yesterday confirmed the names of the 41 athletes who will represent the Island at the Central American & Caribbean (CAC) Games in Veracruz, Mexico, from November 14 to 30.

The bulk of the athletes will represent Bermuda in two team sports, women’s hockey and rugby sevens, while there will also be competitors in track and field, cycling, equestrian, sailing and swimming.

The athletes will be accompanied by Donna Watson, the chef-de-mission, and Katura Horton-Perinchief, the deputy chef-de-Mission .

Tyrone Smith, who won a gold medal in long jump in Puerto Rico four years ago, will be joined by track and field team-mate Shianne Smith, while Nicole Mitchell, Dominique Mayho and Zoenique Williams are the three cyclists.

The three members of the equestrian team are Virginia McKey, who will compete in dressage, and Jillian Terceira and Patrick Nisbett, the show jumpers, with Cameron Pimental and Cecilia Wollmann the two sailors.

Roy-Allan Burch, Julian Fletcher and Lisa Blackburn are the three swimmers.

Judy Simons, the BOA president, said: “We have a very talented team heading to Veracruz and I am confident our athletes will represent Bermuda well in the eight sports in which we are competing this edition of the CAC Games. The BOA is proud to have helped these young people reach this milestone on their journeys to success.”

The CAC Games are the oldest continuous-running regional games, dating back to 1926. Held every four years, the Games typically host competitors from countries in Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda, and the South American countries of Surinam, Guyana, Colombia and Venezuela.

The CAC Games are considered the starting point of international competition for athletes from the region seeking to represent their countries at the Olympic level.

They are designed to provide a step between sub-CAC-region Games held the first year after a summer Olympics and the Pan American Games, which are held the year before the summer Olympics.
