Streaker looks to thwart Village
Bernard Park is familiar hunting ground for Dwayne (Streaker) Adams but what won't be so familiar tomorrow is opposing those whose goals he once celebrated.
The former North Village goalkeeper will be aiming to shut out the likes of Kentoine Jennings, Ralph Bean Jr and Dwight (Payback) Warren when he and Southampton Rangers come to town to tackle the defending Premier League champions.
Already the friendly bragging has been flying back and forth between Adams and his old club mates.
"I don't have a prediction but it should be a lot of fun and I think I'll enjoy it. I'm looking forward to it.
"I've had some laughs with some of the guys at Village. I'm expecting them to come at me extra hard and take lots of chances. My job is to keep them out and I'll do my best to do that."
Noting that Scott Morton's team is one which plays "possession soccer" he said he has warned his Rangers colleagues that "we have to be sharp because Village is an extremely strong unit".
Adams is in no way complacent given Village's stumble in form with back-to-back losses to Dandy Town and Devonshire Colts respectively before rebounding with a victory against Hamilton Parish last Sunday.
Village are currently fourth in the league race on nine points, while Rangers are sixth on six points. The West End outfit would dearly love to boost their position in the eight-team table and put some distance between them and the two clubs at the bottom ? Colts and Somerset Eagles.
"For us it's a really important game. You can see the difference a win or loss makes. It changes the table drastically. Last weekend we were on the bottom and this weekend we're in sixth.
"We have to do well. We're looking to win. Soccer is a game of who wants it more and if you really want it you'll put the fight out there.
"We're coming in prepared to win but, on the other hand, I'm sure Village are coming with the same thing in mind," said the veteran Adams.
Having been on both sides, he conceded the major difference between the teams is a lack of experience and depth on Rangers' part.
"We only have a few players with experience. In North Village, if you take out four players you're replacing them with four quality players.
"I'm not saying Rangers does not have quality players but not with the same level of game experience," he explained.
However, the goalie is optimistic that better days are ahead at Southampton Oval.
"It's taken us a bit of time to gel but I think we're starting to get an understanding among the guys. Overall, we're starting to connect and I'm happy with how it's gone so far."
As for their place in the top flight?
They are determined to hang on to that, he vowed.
"We're there to stay and we're going to do everything we can to stay."
