Irish RFC on maiden tour

Bermuda Irish rugby are enjoying their maiden overseas tour, having left over the weekend to compete in the 19th annual Trinidad Sevens tournament which features various sides from around the globe.

Tom Healy is leading the Irish with Bermuda national team captain Derek (Bobby) Hurdle heading the guest list.

Hurdle will be keen to impress West Indies selectors who will be using the Trinidad tournament to finalise their squad before returning to the iRB Series in Los Angeles in February.

The local side also includes Hurdle?s national XV team-mates Mike Kane and Jonathan Cassidy, products of Irish rugby nurseries Blackrock College and Campbell College respectively.

Former Gaelic football star Colin Keane will provide pace out wide, alongside fellow speedsters Darragh O?Donaghue and Cian O?Sullivan.

Having hosted the popular Easter Classic for some 20 years between the 1970s and 1990s, Bermuda Irish became dormant after the emergence of the World Rugby Classic.

However, in March this year when Bermuda Rugby Football Union hosted the second annual Bermuda Sevens tournament, the Bermuda Irish returned, making the final and eventually finishing runners-up to the Guanos of England.
