Flora set for swim marathon

Qualification for the Commonwealth Games next March and a second-place finish in last weekend?s British Under-19 National Biathlon Championships are further proof that young Flora Duffy can compete with the very best.

But Bermuda?s former Front Street Mile champion, now studying in England, faces one of her biggest challenges next Monday when she attempts a 20 kilometre (12.4 mile) swim in aid of charity.

The teenage triathlete will be among others from Kelly College in Tavistock, Devon, hoping to complete a ?Million Metres Challenge? to raise funds for those suffering from malaria.

Statistics show that the disease, particularly prevalent in Africa, kills one child every 30 seconds.

Duffy, who was beaten in the weekend?s Biathlon Championships by top ranked British junior pentathlete Montana Jones only on a tiebreak after both completed the swim and run disciplines with an equal number of points, will be attempting her longest-ever swim.

The challenge will take place in the Kelly College pool.

So far Duffy has raised pledges of ?126.41 and hopes to reach her target of ?200.00 by Monday.
