Swallows stay top after holding Ravens to draw

All things seemed equal in women?s hockey play last weekend ? with two of five matches ending in scoreless draws and a third in a 1-1 deadlock.

The top of the A league clash between Swallows and Ravens ? both unbeaten this season ? ended up a bit of a non-affair as neither team managed to put anything into the net.

In fact only five short-corners were even earned in this Sunday afternoon match-up ? with Swallows failing to convert on two attempts and Ravens going nil for three.

Having played one more match than Ravens, Swallows continue to hold the top of the table at ten points while Ravens follow at eight.

In other women?s A play, Wildcats and Swifts were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Christanthia Bartley grabbed an open play goal in the 14th minute to put Wildcats ahead 1-0 but Keishae Robinson found the equaliser for Swifts late in the second half.

Both teams had a dismal day on short corners, with Wildcats failing on 11 attempts and Swifts on five.

Both Ravens and Swifts had better results in B league play, however, as Ravens shut down Swallows 3-0 and Swifts picked up three points for their 2-1 result against Wildcats.

Alex Wheatley found the net for Ravens? first two goals against Swallows while Anna Heard netted another in the 67th minute.

Wildcats were first on the scoreboard in their match with Swifts, courtesy of Heidi Lynam who successfully converted a short corner to take them up 1-0 before the break.

But Swifts battled back for two open play goals ? from Keishae Robinson and Milan Wall-Burgess ? in the second half to secure the win.

The final B match saw Cardinals and Canaries mire at nil-nil.

Canaries earned 10 short corners in the Sunday afternoon match, but failed to find the net. Cards were unsuccessful in their four opportunities.

Men?s league play saw more action in the Ds as Polecats scorched Rebels 6-0 and Chameleons took a convincing 5-2 result against Upstarts.

Rebels and Polecats seemed evenly matched in the first half of play which closed with 0-0 on the scoreboard. But Nigel Deane opened a scoring frenzy for Polecats in the 39th minute with an open play goal which was followed ten minutes later by a Carl Seale-successfully converted corner.

Shannon Simmons and Simon Farrington then each found the back of the net to extend the lead to 4-0 but the Polecats weren?t satisfied there ? Deane and Simmons doubled up their tallies with goals in the 64th and 68th minutes of play respectively.

Chameleons evened their record to 2-2 with their 5-2 win over Upstarts. Mark Pettingill had two goals in their winning effort while Mark Finnigan, Billy Spencer and G. Seed each added one.

Gary Tavares kept Upstarts in the match with two goals.
