ICC confirm Kenya tournament for next January
After several weeks of doubt and confusion, it has finally been confirmed that Bermuda will be heading back to Kenya at the end of January for yet another limited-over tournament.
The World Cricket League Division One competition between the best six Associate countries will take place between January 30 and February 7 and will arguably provide the clearest indication yet of how far the national team have progressed since World Cup qualification was secured in the early summer of 2005.
The announcement of the host venue for the tournament was delayed by the International Cricket Council because of concern that Kenya did not possess the requisite three grounds capable of meeting the world governing body?s standards for One Day Internationals.
But after being inspected by former South African allrounder and now top match referee Mike Procter in June and the necessary improvements made to the infrastructure, the ICC are satisfied that Kenya can deliver.
And as was revealed in last week, the competition will also serve as a qualifying event for the Twenty-20 World Championships scheduled for next year in South Africa ? with the top two Associate teams set to join the cricketing big guns in the inaugural event, as well as receiving a fee of $250,000.
Bermuda Cricket Board chief executive Neil Speight has indicated that the Island?s cricketers, already the richest of any in the Associate countries, will be given a performance bonus of close to $4,000 each if they come either first or second in Kenya next year.
