Spurling makes her mark
Megan Spurling has helped fire Kent State University to a place in field hockey's NCAA tournament.
The Bermudian player, who will star for the national team at the forthcoming Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador, scored the fifth goal in Kent State's 5-0 rout of Miami in the opening game of the MAC tournament in Oxford, Ohio on Friday.
In a one on one with the `keeper, Spurling struck a chip shot into the upper right hand corner.
On Saturday Kent State beat regular season co-champions Central Michigan in double overtime 3-2, and in the final on Sunday they beat Ohio University 1-0.
The team were due to find out last night who they would play in the tournament which is the equivalent of the Sweet 16 in college basketball.
The Field Hockey Championships will begin on selected campuses on November 16 and will culminate with the championships at the University of Louisville on November 22 and 24.
In the last coaches' poll, Kent State were ranked seventh, the highest in KSU field hockey history at the end of the regular season.
Spurling said she was looking forward to the CAC Games but would be unavailable for the last few days of the tournament because of school work.
"It will be a challenge to get in synch with some of the women because I've never played with all of them and it's been a while since I played with others," she said. "However, I'm sure we will make the necessary adjustments to develop a strong and hard working Bermudian team."
