Town, Trojans looking to kickstart league campaign

Somerset Trojans and Dandy Town continue their search for a first league win of the season tonight at Somerset Cricket Club.

And with early season bragging rights at stake, sparks are expected to fly in the West End.

Trojans thrashed the Hornets 4-0 at St. John?s Field the last time these two teams met, and that result will almost certainly be in the back of Town minds when tonight?s clash gets underway with the home team favourites to win ? despite not having kicked a ball competitively since October 3.

On that occasion Trojans hit four past Devonshire Cougars to keep intact their bid to reach the Martonmere Cup semi-finals for the second straight year.

Town began their season on a high, winning a first Charity Cup since 2001-02 at the expense of holders North Village.

However, a shock home loss to PHC Zebras last weekend and a dull Martonmere Cup draw against a depleted Village in midweek has now left Town fans scratching their heads.

Tonight?s match will be preceded by an Under-18 Division contest also involving Trojans and Hornets.

Premier Division action continues tomorrow at Bernard Park where defending league champions Village host Devonshire Cougars in the weekend?s other top match.

It will be Cougars? first league game of the season, and one they will be favoured to win over a wounded Reds outfit.

Cougars, who beat Boulevard 4-2 in a midweek Martonmere Cup game, were the last team to defeat Village on their home turf, achieving the rare feat in October, 2004.

Elsewhere, PHC and Boulevard will do battle at Southampton Oval in a match which could go either way. PHC pipped Town 2-1 last weekend while Boulevard crushed new boys Paget Lions 9-1, but then followed that up with a loss to Cougars on Wednesday night.

At White Hill Field the wounded Lions look to bounce back against St.David?s Warriors in another contest anticipated to be close.

In First Division play, league leaders Ireland Rangers are favoured over Southampton Rangers at Malabar, while Prospect should come away victorious over winless Hamilton Parish at Lords.

At Garrison Field, X Roads host St.George?s who suffered their first loss of the season in midweek against Prospect.

Remaining matches see Devonshire Colts pitted against Social Club at Police Field and Wolves hosting Somerset Eagles at Devonshire Rec.
