Struggling Village eager to stop the rot
Defending Premier Division champions North Village will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak against division newcomers St. David?s at Lords tomorrow.
The football Gods have yet to smile upon a Village side that have dominated the local scene since the beginning of the new millennium.
And after relinquishing a four-year hold on the Charity Cup and then losing to PHC Zebras in the Martonmere Cup 72 hours later, indications clearly suggest the Reds will not have things all their own way this season.
Village will walk into the unknown without the assurance of stalwart Kentoine Jennings at the heart of their defence and suspended playmaker Keith Jennings when they meet a Warriors outfit, buoyed from last weekend?s hard-fought draw against Somerset Trojans at the same venue.
Sweeper Jennings injured his right shoulder earlier this week in the Reds? Martonmere Cup Group ?A? clash with PHC Zebras. Midfielder Tafari Outerbridge and captain Ralph Bean jr were both missing from Village?s line-up through injury during that match, and yesterday it remained unclear whether the pair had recovered for tomorrow?s league clash.
Elsewhere, Paget Lions will be gunning for a second straight win, this time against Boulevard at White Hill Field.
Lions ambushed an unsuspecting PHC Zebras last weekend at the same venue, inspirational player/coach Marvin Belboda jumping off the bench to score a brace and assisting in another to seal the historical win.
Paget, however, could find their work cut out for them against a Blazers outfit anxious to turn over a new leaf this season.
Tomorrow?s final Premier contest sees high-flying Dandy Town favoured over a Zebras side missing suspended midfielder Omar Shakir and possibly striker Dennis Russell to injury.
Shakir became the first Premier Division footballer to be sent off for the season during Zebras? 1-0 Martonmere Cup victory over Village at BAA Field on Tuesday night.
In First Division action, Wolves should overpower Southampton Rangers in a match that has been switched from Southampton Oval to Devonshire Rec., Devonshire Colts are favoured over Ireland Rangers at Malabar and X Roads, likewise, should come away victorious over Prospect United at Garrison Field.
St.George?s Colts host Hamilton Parish at Wellington Oval where they should come away with maximum points, while Social Club host Somerset Eagles at Bernard Park.
Heavy rain forced postponement of last night?s Premier match between Devonshire Cougars and Somerset at Devonshire Rec., as well as the women?s match between Lady Cougars and Somerset at the same venue.
