Wiffen wins final to retain crown

Nick Wiffen retained his Shell Divisional Handicap squash title on Saturday when he saw off rising star James Stout in four games in the final.

"James7 started very strongly in the first game, playing very attacking squash and dominating the front of the court," said Ross Triffitt, Bermuda's director of squash. "He won the first game 15-8 with Nick starting on a deficit of minus two."

From then on, though, Wiffen put his foot down and Stout struggled to keep up.

"I think James looked a little bit tired," said Triffitt. "Perhaps a full week of squash on top of a new training regime proved a bit tough for him."

Wiffen won the second game 15-7 and although Stout rallied in the third, Wiffen took it 15-12.

In the final game, Wiffen had too much left in the tank for Stout and he ran out a 15-8 winner.

"It was Nick's court coverage that led to James' demise," said Triffitt. "James was playing quite attacking shots but Nick was still very good at covering the court and getting them back. His drop shots have been on form all week and he was playing some very tight drops."

In the Junior Division, Alex Furtado's terrific week finished with her lifting the title.

The 11-year-old beat under-13 boys' Caribbean champion Robert Maycock in a thrilling five-game match.

"In fact, Robert was leading 2-1 and then Alex came back to win the fourth and the fifth," said Triffitt, pointing out that Maycock did start the match on minus 18 points with Furtado on seven.

"Robert did have a tough task trying to make up so many points but it is very encouraging that Alex has done so well," said Triffitt.
