Jennings invited to Blast trials

North Village?s star midfielder and last season?s MVP, Keith Jennings, will make the transition from outdoor to indoor football when he turns up for trials next week in Baltimore with Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) champions Baltimore Blast.

The 29-year-old national team player, a member of Village?s triple crown winning team last season, will take part in the Blast?s three-day invitational trials from October 11 to October 13 ? his first run-out at a professional outfit in North America in the past three years.

?Keith (Jennings) is coming here to attend trials,? confirmed Blast stalwart, Bermuda?s own David Bascome speaking from Baltimore yesterday.

?I did have a word with Keith the last time I was in Bermuda and I actually spoke with our head coach (Danny Kelly).?

In 2003, Jennings backed away from a one-year deal with Canadian Professional League side Hamilton Thunder after impressing coaching staff during trials.

The crafty midfielder also previously underwent trials with another MISL outfit, Kansas City Attack, in the 1990s.

Jennings could be reunited with former Village, Bermuda and Blast midfielder Bascome who fancies his compatriot?s chances of making the grade.

?This is a very good time for him (Jennings) because right now we are searching for some new players,? Bascome said. ?It?s going to be an opportunity for him.?

The Blast are scheduled to meet John Barry Nusum?s Philadelphia KiXX in a pre-season friendly in Baltimore later this month, a match Bascome hopes to see Jennings involved in.

With his ability to run into space, superb dribbling skills, excellent first touch, shot, and close ball control in tight spaces, Jennings could be the right man for the job.

?That is one of the reasons why Keith was invited because he has those attributes and is not afraid to take chances, especially offensively,? Bascome added.

?He?s not afraid to take on players and he has a good shot. And I think his game will improve overall.

?Keith is one of those players you can put anywhere on the field. He has a good close quarter touch and an excellent shot. And the biggest thing now will be his defensive capabilities.

?There may be a spot open for Keith but he?s going to have his work cut out for him because we will be looking at players coming over from other pro teams. He?s not going to be in camp with players coming from club teams, so his work is going to be cut out.?

Jennings, meanwhile, insists he will be up to the task.

?Physically I?m in good shape and mentally I?m feeling good,? he said. ?This is something I?ve always wanted to do, and so it?s just a matter of me going there and doing what?s required as far as reaching the standard they (coaching staff) are looking for.

?And if this is where I am meant to be (MISL), then I guess I have to take the opportunity and make the best out of it because sometimes these opportunities don?t come your way.

?I don?t think it should be a problem doing what?s required. And hopefully once I get there everything should work out pretty well.?
