Steede sweeps into final

Albert Steede continued his fabulous run at the Shell Divisional Handicap Squash tournament when he beat Tony Puplett to make it to the final.

There he will meet Nick Wiffen who saw off number one seed Ryan Bell at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association last night.

The final will be a battle of the schoolmasters, Wiffen who teaches physics and Steede maths.

Steede, more famed for his cricketing exploits, has only been playing the game for a year but has amazed those around him.

He accounted for number two seed Tommy Sherratt in the quarter-finals before seeing off Puplett in five games last night.

"I think it will be quite fast," he said of the final. "I don't think there will be too much rallying because he has very sharp shots. I am just going to go for broke, I have nothing to lose."

Steede, who has a zero handicap to Wiffin's 12, said on a level playing field he does not think he would have got this far.

"From the first round everyone I have played I think would have beaten me if we had started 0-0, but with the handicap system I have a bit of an advantage because of my fitness," he said. "It's a great tournament for underdogs like me."

Wiffin, a newcomer to the Island victorious in three games last night, said he was not relishing playing Steede.

"He was the last person I wanted to play," he said. "He has a very keen eye and is incredibly fit."
