Pierce picks apart his own game
Surprise, surprise, Antonio Pierce had an outstanding game on Sunday but is still nowhere near satisfied.
The Bermudian NFL star picked off Marc Bulger in the fourth quarter of the 44-24 victory over the St. Louis Rams and also was credited with four pass defences ? surpassing his previous best of for a season and ranking him top of the NFL for linebackers in that category ? as well eight tackles.
But the Giant, signed as a $33m free agent this summer, is still unhappy with the performance.
?We should have eight picks a game if they throw 60 times,? said the perfectionist, who still has a chip on his shoulder over jibes that he is just ?a one-season wonder? following his breakout season with the Redskins last year.
?When I came here, I thought we?d be a top-ten defence. We?re winning, but we?re not a top defence yet. We need that killer mentality.?
Pierce?s interception ? the fourth of his career ? came in the fourth quarter, picking off Bulger?s toss to Jeff Robinson for a 24-yard return that set up one of Jay Feely?s three field goals.
?I had my hands on a lot of balls. It feels great to get an interception,? added Pierce, whose performance at middle linebacker more than made up for his poor display in the loss to the San Diego Chargers the previous week.
?I see myself as a guy who can make picks and we were reading the quarterback?s eyes in zone coverage.?
With 31 tackles, Pierce is ranked 16th in the NFL and third in the NFC.
