Livingston the hero in cup upset
Veteran all-rounder Donovan Livingston struck a brilliant unbeaten 74 to steer Jamaican Association to a stunning four-wicket victory over odds-on favourites Leg Trappers in the Commercial Cricket League's knockout final at Lord's yesterday.
Leg Trappers, who made a modest 172 for nine from their 40 overs after being sent in, appeared on course to complete the coveted league and knockout double when they reduced the Jamaicans to 94 for six in the 19th over, but a superb unbroken stand of 84 between Livingston and Junior Lindo (32 not out) sealed their team's first ever knockout title with more than six overs to spare.
With the scores level, Livingston finished the match in style, off-driving medium pacer Andy Harris (three for 33) for six, sparking wild scenes among the large Jamaican contingent at the ground. Man of the match Livingston, who also hit a half century to guide the Jamaicans to a semi-final victory over West Indian Association, was carried from the field by his team-mates. He hit 10 boundaries in all.
Earlier, Leg Trappers threw away the initiative when skipper Gary Knight, who topscored with 32, was run out, a dismissal that saw the league champions slide from a comfortable 71 for one to 91 for five and they were never able to lift their run rate in the closing overs as medium pacer Glenroy Brown claimed three for 50 and Livingston two for 22.
"We didn't get enough runs," said skipper Knight.
A minute's silence was held before the game for North Village fast bowler Derek Bell who died in a boating accident earlier in the week and Jamaican umpire Jack Thompson who was buried yesterday. League president Al Seymour presented trophies to the teams after the match.
Scores: Leg Trappers 172 for nine innings closed (Gary Knight 32, Justin Freisenbruch 29, David Hosier 23; Glenroy Brown 3-50, Donovan Livingston 2-22), Jamaican Association 178 for six in 33.1 overs (Donovan Livingston 74 not out, Junior Lindo 32 not out; Andy Harris 3-33).
