Third time lucky for KO?
The Commercial Cricket League are set to make a third and final attempt to get their 40-overs-a-side knockout tournament underway on Sunday.
The first round of the knockout, originally set to start on August 31, has twice been postponed - firstly because of West Indies captain Brian Lara's Select match against a Bermuda Select at the National Sports Centre and then last week because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Fabian.
Commercial officials agreed yesterday that unless all three first round matches are played this Sunday the knockout will be scrapped.
"Not everybody's in the mood for cricket after Fabian, " said a league spokesman. "But we feel we should give it a go. We need three weeks to complete the tournament but there are only three Sundays left in September and we don't want to be playing the final in October."
The start of games has been brought forward by 30 minutes to noon and captains have been told to reduce the overs or use run rate if necessary to decide the winners so the semi-finals can go ahead on September 21.
Cup holders Jamaican Association face the trickiest tie. St. David's, who won the cup in 2001, have home advantage and as Lord's is unavailable the east enders have decided to play at Garrison Field, which entails a two-way trip across the damaged Causeway. The match must be completed by 6.15 p.m. so players can get back across the Causeway before it closes at 7 p.m.
League champions Forties take on Devonshire Stars at the Royal Naval Field while league runners-up West Indian Association meet Centurions at Shelly Bay in the other tie. North Village have a bye into the semi-finals.
