Mussenden set to run unopposed
It would appear a fait accompli.
Tuesday night will witness Larry Mussenden stroll into the rear meeting hall of Young Men's Social Club, be nominated and promptly elected and sworn in as the new Bermuda Football Association (BFA) president.
Indeed, all logical indications are that not only will the local barrister win, but go through unopposed for the highest ranking position in domestic soccer.
However, logic has rarely played a great part in the workings of soccer's governing body on the Island, and there remains the chance that someone, or something, may well emerge to slow Mussenden's seemingly unhindered charge to the top.
Challenges, rumoured and fact, from the likes of Aldwyn Savery and Robert Calderon have fallen by the wayside with the emergence of Mussenden as the front runner, leaving only the spectre of immediate past president Neville Tyrrell as a possibility.
Sources clearly indicate that Tyrrell will not stand, but Tyrrell's recent 'endorsement' of Mussenden seemingly left the door ajar for a last-minute bid.
On the surface Tyrrell's statement last week that, "In the absence of any other candidate for president of the Bermuda Football Association, Neville Tyrrell fully supports Larry Mussenden", would appear as a vote for Mussenden, except when that other candidate could well be Tyrrell himself.
"I'm grateful for Mr. Tyrrell's endorsement," said Mussenden, who took the statement at face value, adding how he welcomed any challenge or challengers. "If there is any other candidate that is going to run, as I've said before, it bodes well for football that there are good candidates. I certainly believe that I'm one of them.
"If there are good candidates to choose from then football definitely stands to benefit."
Mussenden has been making the rounds among the affiliate circuit, trumpeting his platform and is confident that the majority will vote in his favour. He admitted to being somewhat bewildered by his catatonic rise, and the corresponding demise of potential challengers.
"I'm very confident that I'll get the support from the affiliates to become president, and I'll be grateful for the opportunity to put in place a lot of things for the betterment of the game," said Mussenden. "I'm extremely optimistic, and really pleased from the feedback that I've been getting back from the clubs as I've been going around.
"I've visited many of the clubs over the past week and a half or so, and I only have maybe two clubs left to see, which I hope to do by Monday night.
"It's been really good. The clubs have been quite receptive, and I think all the clubs are in tune with the platform that I've put forward, that is to work on our communication."
