Young swimmers shine

The first event for the Bermuda contingent was the women?s 100-metre freestyle, featuring Lara Loescher and Eleanor Gardner. Loescher was the top seed in the second heat of this event and she finished in a very creditable 1:04.23. Gardner followed immediately in the third heat and produced the swim of the evening as she posted an excellent time of 1:02.00, chipping 0.20 seconds from her previous best time. More importantly, she set a new 15 to 18 Bermuda age group record in the process, breaking the previous record held by Olympian Kiera Aitken.

Up next was Nick Thomson competing in the 50 metre freestyle event and he also managed a new personal best, as he shaved a second off of his previous best time with an excellent swim of 25.99.

Not to be outdone, Loescher and Gardner returned to the fray in the very next event, the women?s 50-metre butterfly. Swimming side by side in the first heat, almost in a very familiar training atmosphere, the girls both took a second off their previous best times, as they finished in 31.89 and 32.18 respectively.
