Romaine the hero

Irving Romaine reaffirmed his status as one of Bermuda?s premier batsman by scoring a masterful 101 off 111 balls to inspire his team to a third straight ODI win over Canada, and second inside 72 hours.

Despite surviving a chance on 84, Romaine?s innings was no less magnificent as he frequently had the fielders running beyond the fence to retrieve balls.

?I am still a little sore, but I had a job to do and so I just went out there and tried to grind it out and it worked out well and felt really good,? said the skipper.

?Having played against them the last couple of games I knew what was coming my way and I was sort of confident facing their bowling attack.

?When I reached my first 50 I didn?t even think about scoring a century, I just tried to stay on top of the bowling and play as positive as I could.?

Romaine eventually achieved a second straight century at Toronto Cricket Club in 12 months.

?I want to pack this field up and take it home,? the veteran batsman smiled.

As for his team?s performance, Romaine said: ?The guys done very well today and showed a lot of character. We pulled together and done extremely well.?

He also paid tribute to the late bowling heroics of off spinner Hassan Durham who returned match figures of four for 45 off 9.1 overs.

?It was a good effort and the thing I liked most was that Hassan was confident enough to set and bowl to his own field,? Romaine said.

And in terms of the Canadian?s brave run chase, the Bermuda skipper noted: ?We knew they had a good batting side and that Davison and Billcliffe would push at us.

?Their team hasn?t gotten any weaker, and they did very well by putting their heads down and batting.

?However, we were able to get wickets at crucial moments which pushed then back a little.?

Canada coach Andy Pick thought his team made a marked improvement from Saturday?s six-wicket defeat to Bermuda.

?There were positives to take from today?s performance batting-wise which we have not had over the past two or three months of playing one day cricket,? he said.

?But positives account for absolutely nothing if you lose . .. .it?s not a great game of cricket if you lose.

?But from my perspective there were positives within the game we can make part of our plan moving forward. And if we can continue to play that way and compete more often, then today would have been worthwhile.?
