Long jumper Arantxa King finished tenth with a best jump of 5.57 metres at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Beijing, China on Saturday.

The reigning world youth long jump champion ? who leapt to glory in Marrakech, Morocco last year with an effort of 6.39 metres ? was well short of that personal best which would have placed her fourth overall in Saturday's final.

As it was, she came a disappointing last out of the ten competitors who registered legitimate jumps and was over half a metre back of Slovakian Kokot Nina in ninth.

Trinidad's Rhonda Watkins was crowned world junior champion with a jump of 6.46 metres.

The national Under 17 side rounded off their Under 17 World Cup qualifying attempt with an 11-1 defeat to El Salvador.

Vance Brown's side finished third in a group of four following a 10-0 defeat to Canada in the opener in Trinidad followed by a 1-0 against a local President's XI outfit in a dramatic turnaround of fortune.

Despite the heavy defeat, it was still a more than respectable tour for the young team, who had been prepared pre-tour by Cougars coach Andrew Bascome.

Canada, the defending champions, topped the group after a 2-1 win over El Salvador.

Lanky winger Khano Smith made his second appearance for the New England Revolution yesterday during the MLS side's 1-0 defeat against the Chicago Fire.

Smith, the former Dandy Town frontman, replaced Joe Franchino in the 67th minute but couldn't do anything to bring his side back into the match ? firing over with a late chance.

It was just Smith's second appearance of the season following a long recovery from off-season knee surgery.

In England, meanwhile, Damon Ming was an unused substitute as Hayes took on Cambridge City in the Nationwide South on Saturday. The sides drew 2-2.
