Youngsters defeated by USA

A day after an impressively comfortable victory against Argentina, Bermuda?s Under-19 cricketers were humbled by the USA yesterday.

Competing in the 2006 Youth World Cup regional qualifier in Toronto, the Island were bundled out for a mere 86 in 33.5 overs to which the Americans replied with 87 in 17.2 overs to win by eight wickets.

?We were very disappointing in our batting today,? said coach Andre (Doc) Manders.

?Oronde (Bascome) has been our main player and the minute he doesn?t get any runs nobody steps in. He got out pretty early today and we never really recovered though Rodney Trott and Ramen Wijewardena stabilised the innings a bit. The middle order totally collapsed.

?A lot of our players got out caught on the boundaries trying to hit sixes instead of keeping the ball on the ground.?

At one for 12, with Bascome back in the pavilion, Trott and Wijewardena carried the score to 40 before both were out in quick succession, triggering a speedy procession of batsmen to and from the crease.

Mishael Paynter scored 17, Trott, 14, and Wijewardena, 13, while spinner Abhemanyo Rajp proved the decisive difference with a spell of 6.2 overs in which he captured five wickets for six runs.

Stefan Kelly picked up an early wicket for Bermuda but the USA ? coached by former West Indies Test batsman Larry Gomes ? still coasted to victory for the loss of one more scalp which fell to Trott.

Bermuda will play Cayman Islands on Friday and Canada on Saturday.

?Our chances (of winning) are slim. We have to hope the USA lose and that we win our remaining matches,? said a candid Manders.
