Americas squad suffer mauling

The Rest of the Americas team, including several Bermudians, were crushed by Trinidad and Tobago in their opening fixture of the West Indies Under-19 limited-over cricket championship on Tuesday in Guyana.

Ravi Rampaul destroyed the combined side, taking six wickets for ten runs off eight overs as the Americas were dismissed for 66 in 26.3 overs. This was in reply to Trinidad and Tobago's 190 off 48.2 overs.

Five of the Americas batsmen went back to the pavilion without scoring; including four of the six Bermudians playing in the match.

Roy Ebanks of the Cayman Islands top-scored for the Americas with 16 while Bermuda's Jacobi Robinson made 11 and Bermudian captain Stephen Outerbridge, six.

McMullen shines in triathlon

Bermuda resident Kim McMullen produced an outstanding performance, winning her age group and taking first place overall among the amateur women at the recent St. George Triathlon, the Canadian Long Course Triathlon Championships

McMullen, who is originally from Canada but works at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital as a physiotherapist, finished the two kilometre swim, 110 kilometre bike and 20 kilometre run course in five hours, 52 minutes and 26 seconds - an excellent time in hot conditions and over hilly bike and run courses.

The bike course was 20 kilometres longer than the normal half-Ironman distance of 90K.

McMullen now plans to compete in next year's World Long Course Triathlon Championships to be held in Sweden.

Meanwhile, two results were omitted from those in a large group of Bermuda triathletes who went to the Magog Triathlon in Canada. In the Sprint event over a 750m swim, 20K bike and 5K run, Maria Duffy took first place in the women's 50-54 age group in 1:42:33 and Jim Hinton placed second in the men's 40-44 age group in 1:13:52.

Two young Bermuda triathletes both performed well in their respective age groups when they competed in the London Triathlon over the weekend.

Thirteen year-old Amy Fox competed in the super sprint distance and sister Ashley (11) in the 11-12 duathlon, both placing in the top ten.

Amy was believed to be fourth and Ashley ninth although their father, Larry Fox, reported that due to a mix-up, official results had not been released.

Marshall brothers impress

Young Bermudian golfers Tyler and Blair Marshall put in a highly respectable showing at last week's Optimist International Junior Golf Championship held on the prestigious PGA National Resort course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Fifteen year-old Tyler finished in 17th place in the 14-15 age group in a field of 163 which included many of the best junior golfers from around the world. Tyler was tied for second after the first round with a superb two-under-par 70, which included four birdies and two bogeys.

Meanwhile, 13-year-old Blair produced three steady rounds in the 12-13 age group on the narrow General Course of the PGA National Resort, which included an impressive 73 on the second day, to finish 45th in a field of 105.
