Crackdown on antisocial behaviour in the city
A crackdown on antisocial and illegal behaviour in Hamilton is to be launched, it was revealed yesterday.
The Corporation of Hamilton said one way it would help tackle the problem was by the removal of obstructions used as a screen by criminals.
A city spokeswoman said: “The situation is a dire one. Here at the city, we are exploring a menu of options, one of which includes removing obstructions that unwittingly provide cover for illegal activity.
“We want to increase visibility in the areas that are affected.
“Based on community concerns several areas have to be looked at and steps need to be taken so that they are viable spaces for people to enjoy.”
She added: “The city is working with our community partners to see what we can do to re-engage our community spaces.
“Over the next few weeks we will be making some temporary changes as well as long-term changes to see what can be done to maximise the positive uses of our public spaces.”
Hotspot areas to be targeted include Front Street east of the Flagpole, Queen Elizabeth II Park off Queen Street, Court Street and City Hall on Church Street.
The spokeswoman said the city had also “engaged extra-duty police officers” and would use additional CCTV cameras as part of the crackdown.
