`Great Wall' gamble pays off
It is alternatively being called the `Blue Monster', `Blue Miracle' or `Great Wall of Cup Match', depending on whom one speaks to and has attracted more than its share of controversy.
Regardless, the southern boundary wall is in place in time for the big day and St. George's Cricket Club president Louis (Red) DeSilva says that the wall as well as various other refurbishments make for a much improved facility, one fitting for the centenary of Cup Match.
DeSilva, though, admitted how there had been a great deal of doubt as to whether all the improvements could be pulled off in time, but solid support from the membership allowed for a timely completion.
"That's not the `Blue Monster' . . . it's the `Blue Miracle'," said DeSilva, obviously relieved that the gamble had paid off. "There was a lot of doubt as to whether we could get it there in time, but it's there.
"We've redone all our bathrooms inside the clubhouse, one on the outside, have a new sight-screen, have done a humongous amount of painting and patching, have redone auditorium with panelling and flooring replaced.
"The people have been complaining about facilities for years and we're trying to do something to upgrade our facilities. We're expecting huge crowds and we're doing our best to be sure we can accommodate them."
Complaints came in from various quarters when it was announced that the club would be extending the boundary to make room for a walkway on the southern side, which will enable spectators to make a complete circumnavigation of the grounds.
There will also likely be room for one row of seating along the walkway, which was this week being prepared for a concrete pour.
No matter, most of those venturing to the area of Wellington Oval next Thursday and Friday are sure to be pleased with the brilliant blue and refreshing ambiance of the facility.
